Lights, action, people: plan to light up Newcastle CBD

CIVIC leaders will shine a spotlight on inner-city Newcastle in a bid to rid the dwindling central business district of its ghost town status. Light installations will illuminate areas around King and Perkins streets, with late-night openings in surrounding cultural venues tipped to follow.
Newcastle City Centre Committee and Newcastle City Council will get the project under way on Thursday night at Newcastle's old Victoria Theatre.
An artwork depicting 1920s Newcastle residents will be transformed into a vibrant, colour-filled spectacle.
"It's an artwork during the day and then it completely changes at night-time," committee chairman Edward Duc said.
"It will give off a fantastic aura to the city.
"It's a tongue-in-cheek project, looking to inject a bit of fun as well as increase the amount of light in our city streets."
Tours will also run around King Street, showcasing sites utilising LED and black lights and fluorescent paint.
The committee and the council are planning to further boost Newcastle's night-time economy, with more late-opening cultural venues.
"We are concerned because it's [Newcastle city centre] becoming a bit of a ghost town," Mr Duc said.
"Firstly David Jones is gone, and now the bookshop and hotel have closed, it's getting a bit grim around here."
Newcastle's nightlife troubles have been well documented with a lot of the blame landing on the footsteps of licensed premises.
Mr Duc is not convinced limiting the number of licensed premises is the sole solution.
"It doesn't matter how many licensed premises there are, people will still misbehave," Mr Duc said.
"What we need is good transport, good lighting and more late-night cultural venues.
"More cafes, wine bars, art galleries and quirky places that stay open late at night will bring more people to the streets. Then those who want to misbehave will be more reluctant to do so."
Other plans for inner-city Newcastle include a project similar to Sydney's Vivid light spectacle. It would guide pedestrians around Newcastle's heritage buildings using LED light features.
